Find out about methods of transportation to and within the Huvsgul province. We support you and provide multiple reliable and secure options to reach your destination. Choose among popular or individual destinations or hire a driver to travel to wherever you want. Public- as well as private transportation is possible, ranging from flights over busses, off-road vehicles, minivans, motorcycles and animal connivance.
Murun - Hatgal (Huvsgul lake)
For single and independent travelers the public transport to Hatgal is easy to find near the infamous "Black Market" of Murun is the place to find Minibuses departing several times per day. Regular prices for individualists are negotiate able, departing hours are not stabile price about 15.000T. (2013)
For groups, couples or people with big luggage we can easily establish connections to drivers anytime for reasonable pricing.
The Road from Murun to Hatgal is paved, therefore the trip will be short and comparably comfortable.
Murun - Erdernet
Murun –to- Erdernet is a frequently used way, available many times of the day. Also here, your public transport would be a minivan, departing from the central bus station. From Erdernet you have access to the Transsibirian / Transmongolian Railway with the option to travel to Ulaanbaatar and Sukhbaatar (Russian boarder). Currently (2013) the appropriate price for the way to Erdernet is 25000T in a minivan.
For groups or more comfort, HATI will also easily be able to organize you a private driver for an almost similar amount of payment per person.
Murun - Ulaanbaatar
The Central Bus Terminal in Murun is easy to be found, situated close to the central sports stadium.
Public buses depart twice per day at 13:30 and 16:30. It is advised to book the seat (position can be chosen) at least 1-2 days in advance. Costs (2013) are 32.000T, children pay less. Opening hours for the ticket office are 09:00-18:00h.
The second options are Minibuses, departing when they are full several times per day\night. A bit more pricy (45.000-50.000T) but supposedly a little bit faster. HATI can organize you private transportation in reasonable and reliable circumstances.

Within Murun
Within Murun, the Public Transportation is commendable.
Public Buses cost (2013) 200T in the city area. Stops are possible if asked for. The Some regular Stops are in between the wrestling Stadium and 4-square the Black Market and on the mainroads of all Districts of the city. Numbers on the windows (equal to districts of the city) will make the transport easy.
Hitching (Taxi) within the city is quite common. Most official taxis operate white vehicles. Costs are arround 2000 MNT (2013). Just raise your hand at the streets or visit one of the Taxi stands on 4-square, the BusStation or the Black Market.
Murun - Tsagannuur (Tsaatan Community)
The way to Tsagannuur usually passes through Hatgal. The road from Hatgal is rough and you should expect a long journey. Even though private drivers might know different ways, your trip to Tsaganuur must start in Murun. You will need to obtain a boarder permit for the Russian Border Area (incl. Tsagannuur). Those can be obtained in Murun and HATI is willing to help you with the necessary bureaucracy, provide drivers and obligatory guides for the northern area.
We strongly recommend you to plan in at least one day in Murun for the work for permissions.
There will be two National parks on the way, if you plan to visit the Taiga. Entrance permits (+rubbish bags) can be bought at each National park’s entrance. It is suggested to visit the TCVC-NGO for your accommodation in Tsgannuur, which is also working for the Tsaatan Community. They are eligible to organize the boarder issues at Tsaganuur and can provide you with capable guides and transportation during your stay in the Taiga. Local guides might have good information about the life in the Taiga, know the ways for your destination and can give you great experiences while hiking, riding horses, yak or reindeer.
Murun - Darkhan
To Darkhan, minibusses depart from the central Bus Terlinal situated opposite of the wrestling stadium. Departuretimes of the minivans depend on customers, usualy multiple times per day. Price (2013) is 30.000 MNT.
Anywhere else
On land
In the Tourist Information Center (HATI), in Murun, there is a Pinboard where you can organize your trips together with other travelers. Many tourists pass through Murun, therefore a collective approach would often be the most economic and environmentally friendly option.
Depending on your needs, destinations, travel time, road conditions and type of vehicle; multiple private drivers and guides can be organized by us in cooperation. It is possible to rent off-road vehicles with a driver for reasonable transportation to all over Mongolia.
Hitchhiking might be possible, you must calculate mutch time to catch a ride in some cases and will be obliged to pay usually.
At the Huvsgul Lake there is the option for Boat transfer, which can be booked in Hatgal.
The least environmentally friendly, but fastest option is flying.
Aviation:
Thomas Air offers domestic flights and tours to popular destinations in Mongolia. Furthermore, rescue flights, agricultural and geologic asessment flights as well as photographic/filmic tours are offered besides the usual charter, cargo and tourism flights. Experienced Pilots operate also on private airfields with 2011 built aircrafts (Swiss Pilatus PC6 & US Maule M7 235C).

Hunnuair LLC has daily flights to/via Ulaanbaatar and Gobi. From Ulaanbaatar the operated Fokker-50 flies to Choibalsan, Altai, Bayan Khongor and Ultastai. International flights (Airbus A319-100) with the destinations: Bangkok, Hongkong and Shanhai are being offered.
