Namely the lake of Huvsgul (Хөвсгөл нуур, Kovgsgol,Khuvsgul) Nuur attracts many local and foreign visitors. It is the second largest lake by area (after Uvs Nuur) and the Largest by volume. Oftenly called the younger sister of lake Baikal, which was formed by the same tectonic forces. Surrounded by scenic mountains(highest is Munku Sardyk (3.492 m), in the north to the Russian border. The lake lies at an altitude of 1624m approximately, is 136km long, 267m deep and one of central Asia's main drinking water reservoirs. 46 Rivers flow into the Huvsgul Nuur, with a comparable small drainage baisin. The selenge drains into lake Baikal, therefore many species (fish birds, mamals) are endemic and protected by the Huvsgul National Park (Entrance fee 300MNT locals 3000 Foreigners).Local animals are Musk deer, Wolf, Argali, Siberian ibex, Wolverine, Reindeer, Sable, Brown bear, Taimen. In the winter the lake freezes completely. Huvsgul Nuur is one of the 17 lakes with an age of more than 2 mio years.

 

This large Aimag's capital is Murun (Moron). Formerly it was Hatgal which is situated in the south of the lake. Hatgal has about 7000 inhabitants, and many touristic needs can be fulfilled or planned from here. Huvsgul area is the transition zone betwen central asiatic steppe and taiga, therefore rich in nature and and protectworthy.

 

The western border of Huvsgul Aimag is the Ulaan Taiga, just as the Huvsgul area, a center for shamanism and authentic normadic life. Also to be mentioned is the Darkhad Depression with approx 300 lakes, plenty of flowers and beautiful landscapes. Not to forget to mention is, that the northern border to Russia is closed for locals and foreigners at the moment. Negotiations about this issue take long, but are supposed to be in process. Fishing is only partially allowed in certain seasons, permits are to be obtained. Illegal fishing is enforced rapidly and stringent.

 

Hatgal and Murun have Airfielfds only for domestic flights.
