Hiking, Trekking and Camping

Hiking the beautiful countryside.  Set up your tent in the Wilderness or plan daily trips with returning to your initial location.

The most popular hiking site is Khoridol Saridag mountains (Mongolian: Хорьдол Сарьдагийн нуруу, Khoridol Saridagiin nuruu), a 90 km-long mountain range in Huvsgul aimag, between the Huvsgul Lake and the Darkhad valley. The range covers parts of the Renchinlkhümbe, Ulaan-Uul and Alag-Erdene sums. The highest peak is Delgerkhaan Uul (3093m), two other notable peaks are Ikh Uul (2961m) and Uran Dösh Uul (2702m) on the shores of Huvsgul Lake.

The mountains along the lake are rich in phosphorite, and in the 1980s extensive exploration work was done for open-pit mining. Roads built during that time and other remains, are still visible all over the area. However, due to the political and economic changes of the early 1990s in Mongolia and Russia, those projects were cancelled. In 1997, a protected area covering 1886 km² was founded.

For hiking, don’t  forget that most sites are part of a Natural reservation, which means you should pay entrance fee as well as don’t pollute the environment. There are several camping sites you can build your tent. Please note that in local markets might be difficult to find camping equipment you are used to. Other options for hiking are mainly all over the north of the Huvsgul aimag, the eastern side of the Lake is less touristy but offers amazing landscape and views too.

If you don’t have so much time, from nearly everywhere in Murun you can see the surrounding mountains. It is worth it to take a hike to the “warm mountains” north of Murun. Their name goes probably back to the fact that during wintertime you can hardly see snow on them. On the top of the highest peak you will find several big ovoos with many offerings for local spirits.
